Youth Employability Skills (YES)

Employability skills are those basic skills necessary for getting, keeping and doing well on a job. They include skills that are universally sought by employers, generic in nature rather than job specific and cut across all industry types. The Youth Employability Skills (YES) Curriculum was designed to respond to concerns voiced by Cape Businesses regarding young employees who were lacking in basic workplace expectations. YES has been developed locally with local employers in mind. The 25 hour curriculum covers three critical focus areas:

  1. Communications: Speaking and listening, Active/passive listening, Conflict resolution
  2. Customer Service: Phone skills, Problem solving, Customer is always right, When to call a manager
  3. Business Expectations: Punctuality, Positive attitude, Responsibility to employer

The YES Curriculum is already in use by many schools and organizations across the Cape & Islands. For more information, please call Ellen at (508) 775-5900 or ellen@ciwib.org.

Selection of WIA Youth Service Providers

The WIA committee meets yearly to release a Request for Proposals for In School and Out of School WIA Youth programs. The WIA funds have been awarded to programs such as the Barnstable PM School and ALP program, Upper Cape Technical High School's Alternative Programs and the Rebecca Amos Institute at Martha's Vineyard High School, among others.

If you are interested in a copy of the RFP please contact Debbie Maranhas at dmaranhas@jteccorp.com. Please provide her with your organization's name, address, and phone number.

Youth Council Mission and Goals

mThe Cape & Islands Youth Council envisions a community where all youth are a success in school, work, and life. We envision a community that provides all youth with opportunities to become productive and satisfied adults. It is toward that vision that the following Strategic Action Plan for the Youth Council of the Cape & Islands Workforce Investment Board is developed.

MISSION. To serve as a catalyst to build a comprehensive youth service delivery system. The Council develops and implements youth workforce development decisions on behalf of the Cape and Islands WIB and advocates for issues involving youth. To successfully transition to working adulthood, youth need access to services that prepare them for success in employment, improve educational achievement, provide overall support and develop their potential as citizens and leaders. The Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Youth Council works to ensure these four service elements are available to all Cape and Islands youth.

mROLE: The Youth Council will play several roles in relationship to the vision and mission. We will strategically invest in innovation. We will act as an intermediary between businesses and youth, to ensure that a mutually beneficial relationship between both ensues. And we will be a community facilitator and convener to identify issues and collectively solve problems with regard to our mission.

GOALS.
* GUIDE WORKFORCE INVESTMENT PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH
* ADVOCATE FOR ISSUES INVOLVING YOUTH
* CREATE AND PROMOTE A WAY, AND A MOTIVATION, FOR A BROAD RANGE OF YOUTH SERVICES TO CONNECT
