Niche Jobs Can Often Be Lucrative

Career columnist Andrea Kay encourages workers to look beyond traditional careers in corporate or small business settings to those in niche fields that add value to people's lives. These might consist of starting a business that handles basic tasks for busy people (child care, personal shopping, errand running, personal chef, etc) taking care of dirty or gross jobs that no one wants to do (such as doggie-doo removal), or handling tasks that a wealthy person might be willing to pay another person to do (such as medical concierge services). Those who doubt the lucrative nature of these types of jobs will be amazed to hear the story of DoodyCalls. The dog waste removal service was founded in 2004 and in just few years the company has expanded to 26 franchises and earned more than $2 million in revenue in 2008.

Demand Growing for Bilingual Court Interpreters

The percentage of people in the US who don't speak English "very well" increased by 60 percent from 1990 to 2000, according to the US Census Bureau. This trend is creating challenges for our nation's court system, which is required to "uphold the constitutional pledge of equal justice, without regard to race, color, or national origin."

Despite the implementation of certification examinations for court interpreters in 12 languages, the National Center for State Courts reports that "state courts continue to lack qualified interpreters, especially in languages other than Spanish." Although states have created training programs to help improve the interpreting skills of borderline job candidates and increased efforts to recruit qualified interpreters, the Center predicts that the "higher demand for interpreters in recent years is expected to continue and contribute to growth in the number of jobs for interpreters."

For more information on the field, contact the National Association of Judiciary Intrepreters and Translators (www.najit.org) or visit www.bls.gov/oco/ocos175.htm.
