Youth Council's  Successful Career for a Day!

The second annual Cape & Islands Youth Council's Career for a Day event was held Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 and engaged middle school students from the Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.  Three separate tour routes were arranged in advanced, two in the Mid-Cape and one on the Upper Cape, and throughout the day seventeen area businesses opened their doors to students.  Each business gave the students a tour of the company, and spoke to them about the role and education and training in their career, as well as about the range of careers available at their company.

RHCI in Sandwich hosted the opening and closing activities that day, as well as giving tours of their facility.  The Box Lunch of Hyannis was generous enough to donate lunches to the students that day.  The other area businesses that participated were:

FedEx
Cape Codder Resort
Hyannis Fire Station
Yarmouth Police Station
Hyannis Toyota
Infor
Cape Air
Shepley Wood Products
YMCA
WXTK Radio
Massachusetts Military Reservation Installation
U.S. Corps of Engineers Traffic Control Center
Pairpoint Glass
Kingman Marina
Barnstable County Sherriff's Correctional Facility
National Marine Life Center

The Youth Council's Mentoring Committee, which planned the day, thanks everyone who participated and looks forward to coordinating the event again next year.

The Benefits of Mentoring

In 2006, Sun Microsystems, a large technology company, conducted a study of more than 1,000 of its employees to determine if its mentor program was helping to create quality workers who stayed at the company. The answer was a resounding yes. The study concluded that "mentoring has a positive impact on mentors and mentees, producing employees that are more highly valued by the business." It found that employees who participated in the mentorship program were five times as likely to be promoted as those who did not participate in the program. Seventy-two percent of employees who participated in the mentoring program remained at the company for at least five years. Only 49 percent of employees who did not participate in the mentoring program stayed at the company for at least five years.
One unexpected finding from the study was that high-achieving workers received the least benefits from the mentor-ship program.  This surprised company executives since most mentorship programs are established to help identify and develop top workers.
