Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report Update

 

In the week ending March 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 646,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 658,000. The 4-week moving average was 654,750, an increase of 3,750 from the previous week's revised average of 651,000.

More Baby Boomers Delaying Retirement

In early 2008, the first Baby Boomer (a 78-million-strong, demographic group of those born between 1946-1964) filed for Social Security benefits, starting what many call a gray tsunami of retiring Americans. But the expected tsunami has diminished somewhat because the economic downturn has forced more Baby Boomers to keep their jobs and delay retirement, according to Business Week.

This is bad news for the younger workers seeking jobs in industries that expected large turnover due to these retirements, as well as businesses (such as retirement communities, financial consultants, and leisure-oriented companies) that were planning to market products and services to this large demographic.

Elderly Emerge as a New Class of Workers - and the Jobless

Many laid off older workers today are competing for jobs against people half, and even a quarter, of their age. The number of unemployed workers 75 and older increased to more than 73,000 in January, 2009, a 46 percent increase from the previous year. The jobless rate for workers 65 and older is 5.7 percent, which is below the national average but still higher than it has been in previous recessions. As people live longer and maintain better health, some may want the challenge and stimulation of a job, but for others having a job is a financial necessity. Currently, fewer people are covered by defined-benefit plans, such as company-sponsored pensions that guarantee a specific monthly income for life.

People with retirement investments have seen their nest eggs shrink drastically. Many are outliving their savings, and mortgages and medical bills are forcing others back to work because Social Security and Medicare are not enough. Several states are developing programs to help older unemployed workers, and the Obama administration is accepting proposals for creating new ways of connecting workers older than 55 with local jobs. "We're seeing a tremendous increase in the number of people coming for help," says Cynthia Metzler, head of Experience Works, a nonprofit that offers job training and placement for 20,000 older adults in 30 states.

Even when the economy is strong, older workers looking for work tend to spend more time in unemployment. The physical limitations of some may account for part of the difference, but lingering stereotypes that older workers are more expensive, less productive, and resistant to change are far more damaging, experts say.
