New Trend: Start-Ups Offering |
|
"Alternative Compensation" to Workers.
Many tech entrepreneurs have great ideas for potentially lucrative
products and services, but no money to take their inspiration from
idea to reality, To solve this problem, they are offering "alternative
compensation" to prospective part- and full-time employees which translates to no pay, but the opportunity for experience,
good will if the company makes it big, and an equity stake (for employees who reach a set number of hours). In these difficult economic times, many workers view this arrangement as an equitable
tradeoff and a means to gain valuable experience, keep
their skills up to date, and network in their industry. |

Job Prospects Looking Up For Arborists

|
If someone tells you to "Go climb a tree" it is easy to get the wrong idea.
But did you know that there are approximately 200,000 people,
known as arborists, in the United States who are specially trained to
climb and "diagnose and treat tree diseases and recommend preventative
health measures?"
Arboriculture education programs are offered by college and universities; some companies also offer on-the-job training to workers. Entry-level positions such as tree climbers do not need a college education to work in the field. Salaries for arborists range from less than $20,000 to more than $46,000. The only drawback to this field is that it can be dangerous.
The US Department of Labor and South Dakota State University report that at least 100 arborists die each year as a result: of "electrocution, falling branches, getting caught in a wood chipper, or receiving a fatal blow to the head. "in the wilting economy, some people are using trees to make a little extra money. The SouthtownStar reports that Monee, Illinois, resident Mark Larson is charging visitors $20/head to climb a 300-year-old oak in his yard. Customers have dubbed the tree, "Goliath." Larson provides climbing equipment, and the tree has stabilizers and climbing ropes. |
Bright Future Predicted
in Desalinization Industry

|
In certain areas of the United States, people take the availability
of freshwater for granted. But did you know that less than 1 percent of accessible water in the world is safe for consumption?
The United Nations predicts that 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions (including those in the US) with scarce water supplies by 2025. The growing shortage of fresh water is ironic considering that oceans cover nearly 71 percent of the earth's surface. But until recently, there were only a small number of desalinization plants-mainly in the Middle East-that converted sea water to potable water. This is changing as technological advances continue to reduce the cost of desalinization. (Note: Many environmentalists view desalinization negatively because the process requires a large amount of energy and can harm ocean environments.)
There are approximately 1,500 desalinization plants in the United States alone. Fortune reports that the $30 billion industry is expected to double in capacity by 2016." This suggests that there will be strong employment opportunities for chemists and engineers who have excellent problem-solving skills and who are willing to travel to help build and work in desalinization plants in the United States and throughout the world. |
