Breaking News!: Job Responsibilities Changing in Television Newsrooms

Those aspiring to work as news producers, writers, and editors in television newsrooms will have to expand their skill-sets. The Chicago Tribune reports that WMAQ-Ch. 5 a major news station in Chicago, has asked its existing news producers, writers, and editors to reapply for "new, multifaceted positions," which involve providing content for not only television, but "the Internet, mobile devices, and other platforms." Some of the new job titles include platform manager and content manager. This is not an isolated development. Other stations across the US are following suit. WNBC-TV in New York City has even changed its newsroom into what it calls a "content center."
What's fueling the job title/job duty changes? Declining ad revenues. As advertising revenues shrink, television stations across the country are seeking new sources of revenue and asking current and future employees to learn new job skills in order to help them stay competitive and reach more viewers/readers.
In the past, newswriters focused on crafting well-written news copy. And editors focused solely on polishing news copy. Todays media professionals will be expected to be jacks-of-all-trades editing, writing, and preparing graphics for news segments. And they may be asked to revise news segments for another platform, such as their stations website.

Common Characteristics of Successful Women
h

Never before have women enjoyed so much success in the workplace. In 2007, females made up 48 percent of the US workforce (or 71 million workers), according to the US Department of Labor. Of these, 39 percent were employed in management or professional positions. Women outnumbered their male counterparts in several occupations, including financial manager, medical and health services manager, accountant, and human resource manager. Their education and training help women rise to the top, but certain personal characteristics also aid in their career ascent. Martha Carlson, co-principal and executive coach at The Bailey Consulting Group (www.thebaileygroup.com), recently cited a few of the most common traits for high-achieving women in an article she wrote about women in leadership positions. These include:

  • Self-Awareness. Successful women are keenly aware of their strengths and weaknesses. This self-awareness allows them to use their strengths, be it problem solving or organizational skills, to compensate for any areas in which they need improvement.
  •  Authenticity. Women show qualities of authenticity by having integrity and knowing they do not need to act like a man in order to do well; they merely need to act like themselves.
  • Fearlessness. Women realize they need to push aside their fears in order to achieve their goals. They take calculated risks, and when they "fail," they view it as a chance to pursue new opportunities.
  • Focus. Women often take pride in being multi-taskers. However, successful women find they are more effective when focused on one big project or goal at a time. They acknowledge the pitfalls of being overly stretched for time and taking on too many commitments.
  • Controlled Energy. Endless hours at the office, with little time for physical and emotional replenishment, only results in fatigue, reduced productivity, and, inevitably, workplace burnout. Successful woman know they are most valuable when mentally and physically strong-and this is achieved by getting adequate sleep and exercise. This is not to say any one of these characteristics are exclusive to women. However, women who are successful in the workplace tend to have these traits and use them to their advantage.
