The cost to replace an employee can be as high as 241% of annual salary, but the long-term cost  to the  organization's  Service-Profit Chain is even higher. A benchmarking report by Best Practices, LLC addresses the effects of turnover on the bottom
line and offers insights on how companies can keep their employees engaged to tremendously
improve productivity and the overall customer experience. According to data from the report, a reduction in turnover rates by just two percentage points, can result in a savings of $3 million annually. Depending on the level of employees (supervisors versus front-line employees) and the reduction rate, this figure can escalate to savings as high as $40 million annually. The full report, Employee Engagement and the Service-Profit Chain, is available with a complimentary summary at
. It highlights the best practices in identifying and improving drivers that are proving most effective in engaging employees in their jobs, their companies and their work groups.

(CAMP) Cape Area Management Program

Last September eleven local businesses and nonprofit organizations enrolled thirty of their employees in Cape Area Management Program (CAMP), a training program funded through the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund.  Over the course of this three year grant we hope to train more than 150 supervisors and managers in the basics of practical management, team work, project management and continuous quality improvement. Each training session is comprised of 64 classroom hours (lecture and discussion) and 8 hours of peer to peer practicum (practice new skills, share best practices, addressing real time problems).

Halfway into the program employers are already seeing benefits to the training.  In conversations with our employer partners, we have received positive feedback about their employees' incorporating new skills into their work, coaching others with their new skills, developing confidence as managers, seeking to communicate more effectively and taking on new responsibilities.

This spring we will be offering the training in the Falmouth area along with desktop delivery to trainees on the Islands or those unable to commute to the training site. The classes will be delivered in real time to employee's desktops with chat room interactivity so that participants can ask questions and receive immediate feedback.  For more information please contact Project Coordinator, Joan McDonald at 508-775-5900.

(SMHP) Southeastern Massachusetts Healthcare Partnership

The Project Management training track of the Workforce Competitive Trust Fund's Southeastern Massachusetts Healthcare Partnership Project was successfully completed on December 2nd, 2009. The program, just one part of four healthcare training initiatives through Commonwealth Corporation and coordinated by Cape & Islands Workforce Investment Board, trained eighteen Cape Cod Healthcare IT directors, managers, and staff.  Utilizing the Project Management Certificate Program from the Executive Development Center of Bryant University, participants with varying backgrounds and experiences with project management were presented with the globally endorsed PMBOK - Project Management Body of Knowledge.  Completing this program has given participants industry recognized tools, techniques and knowledge to significantly improve their role as managers in supporting key projects aligned to their employer's strategic plans.
