Video Resumes Not Accepted by Majority of Hiring Managers

Only 24 percent of senior executives surveyed by Robert Half International said that their companies accepted video resumes from job candidates. Employers cite a "fear of bias claims from applicants" as one major reason for their lack of popularity. "Before submitting a video resume, job candidates should check with the hiring manager to ensure the company does not have a policy against their use in evaluating candidates," advises Max Messmer, chairman and CEO of Robert Half International.

More Social Employees Have Higher Earnings
hn

Having sparkling social skills might be a better predictor of future earnings than test scores, according to a study of data from the National Longitudinal Study of 1988 by Dr. Christy Lleras, a sociologist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her work, which recently appeared in Social Science Research, found that "pupils described by teachers as conscientious, motivated, and able to relate well to peers and adults" earned $3,200 more a year than students who scored well on tests, but had weaker social skills. "My findings show that the most successful students are those who have not only high achievement test scores but also the kinds of social skills and behaviors that are highly rewarded by employers in the workplace," Dr. Lleras says. She also found that students who participated in athletics and school organizations had more educational and occupational success that students who did not participate in these activities.
